Should I Include a First Look on My Wedding Day? Three Reasons My Answer is YES!

As a wedding photographer, whenever my clients are considering doing a first look, I always encourage them to do one. This is one of the best modern twists on a wedding tradition, and even though it seems small, it actually has so many benefits that impact your whole day! Here are my top three reasons to include a first look on your special day.

1. Great for Scheduling

The schedule is Queen when it comes to your wedding day and including a first look can actually help keep everyone organized and on time. Not only will all your bridesmaids and groomsmen be ready earlier, but it can also help to get many of those pictures out of the way. After the first look is a great time to get those fun wedding party pictures done before the ceremony. This can feel like a “downtime” while waiting for guests to arrive, but it can be an awesome opportunity to get all the pictures that you want with your crew. Plus, the energy is high getting ready for the ceremony (and alcohol consumption is lower)! Then, after the ceremony, only family is left to photograph, which is fewer groups of people to manage, and a quicker transition to the reception!

2.  One of the Only Moments Alone with your Partner

Anyone who has gotten married will tell you the whole day is a blur — a wonderful, beautiful blur — but a blur, nonetheless. A first look gives you and your partner a few minutes alone, some of the only alone time the whole day. After the pictures, I usually give my couples 10-15 minutes to spend with each other without pictures before inviting the wedding party to join. Just a moment alone to spend with your love.

3. It’s Best for My Shy Brides and Grooms

If you don’t want all your emotions to be on display for your friends and family, a first look can be a great time to share a private and emotional moment. That way, the first look isn’t in front of everyone down the aisle, but with just each other. I know that many of my shier brides and grooms have appreciated this private and intimate moment and it even helped with the nerves of the ceremony!
